I’m Having Surgery…Not Going to Church!!!

fire

A while back I  helped a friend do her pre-op check in at our local city hospital.  When we approached the check in counter where you give ID and answer pre-op questions I noticed there was a bible at each station, and I thought that’s odd? This is a hospital not a church! It got worse from there.  As we sat there answering questions and going over paperwork a voice came over the loud speaker and began to preach a sermon. The check in lady said every day at certain times they offer the good word over the loud speaker. As we were walking to another section of the hospital/church I saw a group of people in a hallway holding hands and speaking aloud in an apparent prayer circle. I thought, am I on Candid Camera? Is this an episode of the Twilight Zone? WTF!!??  I couldn’t wait to get out of there. I was horrified.  A hospital is a public space that serves the public when they are in need of medical attention.  It is not a church! I did not know that religious organizations could run a hospital, but apparently they can. That in and of itself I have no problem with, but when their patients are trapped and subjected to the views of said hospital/church, and forced to hear sermons when seeking medical care, that is clearly crossing the line. I am fortunate enough to have the option to go to another near by city’s hospital for medical care. Believe me, I will not set foot in that church/hospital ever again!  I wonder though how many rural places have had their medical facilities taken over by religious organizations and do not have such options? Our country was founded on freedom of religion, and freedom from religion.  I happen to be Atheist, but even if I subscribed to a religion that was not christianity, it would still make me uncomfortable to be preached to while seeking medical care.  I felt as though if you did not subscribe to the dogma they were preaching you might not receive the best care at their facility.  What if you happen to be Muslim, or Pagan, gay or transgender for instance?  I guess when they can’t get people to come to their church and buy into what they’re selling they’ve sunk to the level of preying on possible converts (unsuspecting citizens) when they are at their most vulnerable. I was outraged then and did my best to forget about it, but recently I keep seeing ads for this local church/hospital and my anger is renewed.  Perhaps this will be the fire I need to start my first petition?  Anyway, it being Nano Poblano, it is if nothing less, fodder for a new blog post.  Climbing off soap box now. Nano Poblano post #3 done!  Cheers Team Tiny Peppers!

An Open Letter to Brick and Mortar Retailers Everywhere that Harass their Customers

Dear  Home Goods, Target, Kohls, Petsmart, (Insert your favorite store here),

Stop harassing your customers! It used to be so much fun to go shopping.  It has turned into a hassle at the checkout, and sometimes even before.  If you want to stop losing SO much business to Amazon, give customers what they want without the hassle.  I am SICK and TIRED, of being aggressively targeted at check out to sign up for your tracking promotions, store credit cards, or to give to whatever charity you have decided to support with the harassment of your customers.  Checking out used to be a breeze. The order would be rang up and we would offer whatever form of payment and that would be the end of it. Now every employee you come into contact with will attempt to coerce you into signing up for a store credit card.  A polite no thank you doesn’t seem to get the message across. You are then made to feel stupid for not wanting to save whatever percentage off they are offering at the time.  When you say no thank you again in a firmer tone, they usually reply with something like “I’m just trying to save you some money and help you out”.  No, you are trying to meet your sales goals so that you can get that bonus or whatever and help yourself out!  Every savvy consumer knows that store credit cards are a rip off. They have high interest rates and are designed to lure you into carrying a balance and paying that ridiculous interest.  I LOVE Amazon! I know…it’s dangerous, but I love the ease and accessibility.  You can find everything on Amazon. You can read reviews, do research, all right from the comfort of your home. Amazon saves your payment info, if you let them, (which is why you should always enable two factor authentication) you push the button, without the hassle of a complicated pos, and voila your items are delivered right to your door.  If you are a Prime member your items usually come within a couple of days.  No fuss, no muss! It’s pretty hard not to love it.  I have now bought things on Amazon that would have in the past been unheard of mail order purchases, like a bed, and a bed frame.  I read the reviews and did some research, and pushed the button.  Lo and behold in a couple days a bed showed up on my doorstep.  It was fricking awesome!  It’s a better bed than the tempurpedic we once paid a couple grand for.  So why would I physically go to a place where I am going to be harassed.  So far the only good reason is, you want to touch what your buying before you buy it.  There are some things that are better seen in person before purchasing.  It doesn’t seem to be enough that we shop at your stores and give you our hard earned dollars, no… you want to collect and sell our info too, and coerce us into high interest rip off cards.  Be warned, there is very little these days that you can’t get on Amazon, and unlike YOU they appreciate, cater to, and don’t harass their customers.

Sincerely,

Frustrated Consumers Everywhere

Pie for Breakfast

20171231_131255

The toxic torrent of hatred, bigotry, misogyny, racism, class-ism, sexism, and all around buffoonery that dominates our news cycles is nearly more than I can bear.

A president (not my president) that makes a mockery of our nation, our democracy, and assaulting women makes me fear for my safety and consider options of flight.

The onslaught of long overdue allegations of sexual misconduct and assaults, criminal prosecutions, and the crash and burn career endings of predatory men in power give me hope for our future.

Rays of sun sparkle on small and large bouts of activism and resistance…

Alabama organized and exercised their constitutional right to vote to keep a known pedophile out of office. Some even voted against their own party because they knew it was the right thing to do.

The tide is turning…

Red to Blue…perhaps…

But I prefer a nice shade of Purple…

Compromising, loving and caring for the whole not just a few.

We are one race HUMAN and we need to

start acting like it!

Until then we must do what we can do,

And there’s always…Pie for Breakfast.
