Banana Seats, Blue Eyes and Laughter

And so you said with your eyes intent and beaming

“Just try… we’ll do it together and if we start to fall

I’ll put my feet down… just try”.

If ever there was someone who could will

something into existence it was you!

Then with sweaty, trembling hands,

pushing years of denigration out of my head,

I gripped the bars stood atop the highest pedal

and pushed off hard with my other foot.

We wobbled horribly while gaining momentum,

but to my complete incredulity we did not fall!

How perfect that I experienced my first

inklings of freedom amidst your hoots and hollers,

and encouraging smacks of camaraderie…

the day I learned to ride a bike.

Buried Treasures of Yesteryear

Good that you were smaller, not abler, but more willing

To trudge through the muck in search of the pay dirt

that would feed our candy fix.

And I your able assistant…

did my best not to make contorted faces

when you emerged from the debris

with your mostest bestest find…

With a little tape and glue and warshing

you’d say with your eyes beaming,

surely it would bring a pretty price?

They never saw us coming

with your ice cubes in Antarctica smile

you’d fleece them of all the change they had to spare.

With blond spikes, blue eyes of wonder

and unabashed enthusiasm…

What mortal could have possibly resisted?

Most certainly not I.

Birch Switches, Twine, and Crayfish

Twinkles in azure blue cemented your resolution…

So off we went in search of the perfect pieces of timber

that fashioned with some string would later become our poles…

Another grand adventure would find us at the water’s edge,

you baiting my string with precision as I watch in awe…

wondering if this is really going to work?

Soft breezes ripple the water,

your face is round with anticipation and excitement

and it’s contagious!

Fate smiles upon me first much to your surprise and wonder?

Like a drill sergeant you order me pull him in! pull him in!!!!

And in one fell swoop adulation and exaltation

give way to anger, scorn and condemnation…

When to my horror and squeals,

the alien thing with pinchers at the end of my line

drops back into the water and scurries under a rock!

Your face softens with compassion and then laughter

I was after all a girl…

Fate was laughing too

as we filled our bucket with your creepy crawly delights…

the day you taught me to fish.
